Jo gave a soft, rueful laugh. “Well, I did have a big night planned watching TV, but as of an hour ago I’ve got a date, would you believe?”

The phone echoed hollowly for a long second. “Ah. Let me guess. Tall, blond, and nice looking?” Jo laughed. “Yes to all three.”

“He’s a fast worker.”

“He seems nice enough. He was divorced last year.” Jo sighed.

“I have a feeling he’s still getting over it. And I also suspect it could be a long night.”

“Do you think he needs a shoulder to cry on?”

“Maybe something like that. If he does it will be a case of the blind leading the blind.” Jo pictured Alex standing by her breakfast bar. “I don’t mean to sound awful, but in retrospect I think I’d rather be coming over to your place.”

Alex laughed softly. “Is it too late to change your mind?”

“Afraid so. But thanks for the invitation, Alex,” Jo said sincerely.

“I was just going to break open a bottle of bubbly to toast my successes, so do you want to make it next Saturday night instead?

I haven’t rung my friends yet and, come to think of it, it would give them a little more notice, too.”

“That would be great. Are you sure you want to put it off till next week?”

“Probably more sensible anyway. I have to go down to Brisbane tomorrow. I’ve got some business to do down there, and I’ll be away most of the week. What say we make it for dinner, six-thirty next Saturday?”

“Sounds great. Formal or casual, and what can I bring?”

“Definitely casual,” Alex assured her. “And just bring yourself.”

“Great. It will be something to look forward to.”

“Okay. Well, I’ll see you then.”

“Have a good time in Brisbane,” Jo said.
